Thus it is to be seen that religion is the bed-rock on which the culture. the arts and crafts of the people of Himachal are founded. Their festivals and fairs also draw their inspiration from religious beliefs and rituals. The most important festival is Dussehra celebrated three days after the rest of India. The logical explanation for this difference is that the rulers of the former hill states of Himachal owed allegiance to Maharaja Ranjit Singh and paid court to him at Lahore.

In Kullu, all idols of the village deities are taken out of the temples and carried in palanguins to Kullu. They all assemble in the Dhalpur grounds. On the tenth day, there is a symbolic destination of Ravana and the Dussehra Fair winds up.
